About Virginia Lee

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Virginia was immersed in traditional Chinese painting techniques from an early age. Her journey took her to Toronto as a teenager in the early 1980s, where she attended the Ontario College of Art and later earned a bachelor’s degree from York University. This cross-cultural experience, coupled with her unique vision and infinite creativity fueled a constant evolution in her artistic style.

Through her art, Virginia depicted her ever-changing world from multiple perspectives, crafting multilayered imageries by reshaping fragments of altered realities into harmonious organic forms. This fusion of figuration and abstraction creates a visual narrative that captures the intertwined fluidity between time and space, illustrating how nature and society can merge seamlessly. Her meta-realist universe still challenges the senses, inviting every viewer to meander beyond the surface into a realm of intuitive discovery.

She also pursued creative writing, completing the first novel of a trilogy based on her family history, as well as a few children’s stories, illustrations, and some commissioned works. Her career earned her numerous awards and accolades, including a residency at the Mississauga Art Center and the Ontario Art Council support for her Phoenix Express project. Her art is cherished in collections worldwide.

Virginia’s sudden passing left everyone stupefied and bereft of her unique perspective on life. Still, her legacy will continue to inspire artists and art enthusiasts alike because her work keeps talking to us and will carry on for a very long time.
